General
After an accident, the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) sends a crash signal via the CAN bus, among other things, causing other control units to start various functions. These measures as a whole are intended to further reduce the consequences of an accident.

Function
Functions that may be triggered on a car after a collision are listed in the following table:
| Subfunction | Aim |
|---|---|
| Switch on hazard warning system. | Warn other road users. |
| Switch on interior illumination. | Make orientation in the vehicle easier for vehicle occupants or persons rendering assistance. |
| Switch on ambient lighting (vehicles with ambient lighting). The ambient lighting lights up red at full brightness. | Improve orientation for persons in vehicle interior. |
| Open central locking. | Enable access to vehicle occupants, to auxiliary material and to the QR code at the fuel filler flap. |
| Open front side windows and, depending on the equipment installed, also open side windows in rear passenger compartment. | To extract any smoke particles generated by the restraint equipment. |
| Switch off engine (depending on type of accident and impact severity). | Reduce fire hazard. |
| Shutoff air conditioning system. | Prevent any ingress of noxious gases, reduce fire hazard. |
| Trigger pyrofuse (hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles or vehicles with 48 V technology). | Switch off high-voltage on-board electrical system and reduce voltage in system. |
| Switch off high-voltage components (hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles). | Switch off high-voltage on-board electrical system and reduce voltage in system. |
| Switch off 48 V components (vehicles with 48 V technology). | Switch off high-voltage on-board electrical system and reduce voltage in system. |
| Switch off stationary heater (vehicles with stationary heater). | Reduce fire hazard. |
| Automatic emergency call (vehicles with RAMSES or HERMES communications module) | Notify rescue services as quickly as possible. |
| Crash-active easy entry and exit feature (vehicles with seat adjustment with memory function). The electrically adjustable steering column is moved upwards. |
Make it easier for driver to exit vehicle or for first aiders to rescue driver from vehicle. |
| Post-collision brake (depending on equipment): If an accident is detected, the multi-collision brake can initiate automatic braking. The parking brake is applied automatically if the vehicle comes to a standstill. The driver can cancel this automatic brake application by braking more heavily than the automatic brake application or by pressing firmly on the accelerator pedal. | The severity of a consequential collision can be reduced or even avoided depending on the accident situation. |
| Emergency responders (depending on equipment): Behavior instructions are displayed in the central display in certain detected breakdown situations and after a severe accident. | Orientation aid and support in an exceptional situation. |
Functions that may be triggered on an off-road vehicle after a collision are listed in the following table:
