General
During power transmission, all component parts transfer the engine torque generated by the combustion engine to the driven gears.
Function
The engine torque is transferred from the crankshaft to the torque converter, automatic transmission and transfer case (in all-wheel drive).
Power is transferred in the torque converter via the driven impeller by diverting hydraulic fluid to the turbine wheel which is connected to the drive shaft. If the torque converter lockup clutch is engaged, force flux occurs via the mechanical connection.
Depending on the gear ratio and actuated shift elements, the torques output by the torque converter are forwarded to the power output shaft via the gearwheels of the planetary gear sets with the aid of the multiplate clutches and the multidisk brakes. A reduction in the output speed in low gears leads to lower vehicle speeds with simultaneously increased tractive forces and torques at the driven gears.
