General
The electronic ignition lock control unit (EIS) (N73/8) is located on the right, next to the steering column.
Function
The electronic ignition lock control unit (EIS) (N73/8) has the following tasks:
- Gateway (interface between CAN connections and serial bus)
- Reading in of signals
- Evaluation of input parameters
- Output of signals
- Power supply of transmitter key and data exchange with transmitter key
Gateway
The processor for controlling the gateway functions also acts as an interface between the following data bus systems:
- Interior CAN (CAN B)
- Diagnosis CAN (CAN D)
- User interface CAN (CAN HMI)
- User interface CAN 2 (CAN HMI2)
- Periphery CAN (CAN PER)
- Suspension FlexRay (Flex E)
- Serial bus (Serial bus)
Reading in of signals
The input parameters are read in via the following connections:
- Interior CAN (CAN B)
- Diagnosis CAN (CAN D)
- User interface CAN (CAN HMI)
- User interface CAN 2 (CAN HMI2)
- Periphery CAN (CAN PER)
- Suspension FlexRay (Flex E)
- Serial bus (Serial bus)
Direct line
The following signals are read in via a direct line:
- Terminal 30
- Circuit 30b (emergency battery supply)
- Circuit 31
- Door lock rotary tumbler signal (left front door control unit (N69/3), right front door control unit (N69/4))
- Park pawl signal (power electronics control unit (A79/3), fully integrated transmission control (VGS) electric controller unit (N15/15))
- Relay actuation, plus (pre-fuse box (F1))
- Actuation of illumination (engine start/stop button (S2/2))
CAN connections
The signals are read in by the electronic ignition lock control unit (EIS) (N73/8) via CAN. The input parameters that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor, and the relevant components are then actuated. Signals are output via the corresponding lines and CAN connections.

Serial bus
The electronic ignition lock control unit (EIS) (N73/8) is connected to the electric steering lock control unit (N26/5) via the serial bus.
Power supply of transmitter key and data exchange with transmitter key
When the transmitter key is inserted into the electronic ignition lock control unit (EIS) (N73/8), it switches on the inductive power transmission to supply power to the transmitter key. Encrypted data is exchanged via infrared signals between the transmitter key and the electronic ignition lock control unit (EIS) (N73/8) for identification of the transmitter key.
