Driver Assistance Systems, Function - GF54.00-S-0002TRF

Model 447

With Code XM0 (Facelift)

Driver assistance systems, general

The driver assistance systems support the driver in various situations either actively or passively depending on the configuration of the systems. In both cases, the driver assistance systems contribute to driving safety. This helps to reduce the frequency of accidents and their consequences. Ride comfort is also enhanced.

The following driver assistance systems are available and are described in separate documents:

Crosswind Assist

The Crosswind Assist is integrated in the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit (N30/4). The Crosswind Assist detects wind influences that act on the vehicle, and issues visual signals to warn the driver. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit regulates a one-sided brake intervention at the front and rear axle which counteracts the crosswind and the yaw motion of the vehicle.

Attention Assist

IMPORTANT Vehicles with code JW8 (ATTENTION ASSIST)

The attention assistance system is integrated into the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit. By evaluating steering patterns, any onset of driver fatigue (e.g. on long monotonous journeys on freeways and highways) can be detected. If the evaluation indicates fatigue or an increasing lack of attention by the driver, the driver is prompted to take a break by means of visual and acoustic warnings.

CRUISE CONTROL (CC [TPM])

IMPORTANT Vehicles with code MS1 (CC)

The cruise control constantly adjusts the actual speed of the vehicle without operation of the accelerator pedal to the target speed set by the driver. The vehicle is also automatically braked through active intervention by the brake system when driving down a hill to maintain the target speed.

IMPORTANT The driving assistance systems specified below are based on camera or radar technology. People and objects such as, e.g. vehicles and obstacles or traffic signs are registered on the basis of camera or radar technology.

Depending on the particular requirements called for, each of the driver assistance systems uses the detection ranges of the following components shown as a diagram in the following graphic:

Detection ranges of driver assistance systems

Lane Keeping Assist

IMPORTANT Vehicles with code JW5 (Lane Keeping Assist)

The Lane Keeping Assist detects any unintentional driving across lane markings and issues a haptic warning to the driver in certain situations by initiating vibrations on the steering wheel.

The Lane Keeping Assist evaluates the detection range for the front field of vision of the camera (B)

Active Brake Assist

IMPORTANT Vehicles with code BA3 (Active Brake Assist)

The Active Brake Assist continuously checks the safe distance to the vehicle immediately in front and warns the driver visually and acoustically of potential collisions (e g rear-end collision) with vehicles that are either moving or stationary or with crossing pedestrians or cyclists thereby significantly reducing the risk of an accident In an imminent collision situation the Active Brake Assist initiates autonomous partial braking through to maximum full-stop braking.

To do so the radar sensor evaluates the detection range of the midrange radar in the detection range of the front long-range and midrange radar (A).

Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC

IMPORTANT Vehicles with code ET4 (Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC)

The Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC automatically regulates the speed and distance to the vehicle in front to match driver requirements in a vehicle speed range of v = 0 to 200 km/h and v = 200 to 0 km/h.

To do so the Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC electric controller unit evaluates the detection range of the front long-range and midrange radar (A).

Blind Spot Assist

IMPORTANT Vehicles with code JA7 (Blind Spot Assist)

The Blind Spot Assist monitors the rear and side areas of the vehicle using short-range radar and if necessary informs the driver that an intentional lane change (turn signal light active) is not recommended at this time In a broader sense the Blind Spot Assist acts as an extension of the outside mirrors.

The Blind Spot Assist evaluates the detection range of the rear short-range radar (C).

Traffic Sign Assist

IMPORTANT Vehicles with code JA9 (Traffic Sign Assist)

Traffic Sign Assist detects the traffic signs on the route being traveled by the vehicle It notifies the driver of signposted speed limits and prohibitions or their derestriction It also issues both a visual warning and a warning tone when entering a freeway or expressway opposite the specified direction of travel (wrong-way driver scenario).

The following traffic signs are registered and evaluated:

The Traffic Sign Assist evaluates the detection range for the front field of vision of the camera (B).
