2. Introduction
This RP provides information for the cost-effective acquisition or use of PCs for vehicle service. In general, PCs used in service applications:
- Obtain electronic vehicle fault data.
- Assist in problem diagnosis;
- Calibrate components.
For these functions, the PC must be able to access the vehicle datalink. One such datalink is defined by TMC RP 1201, Joint TMC/SAE Recommended Practice for Serial Data Communications Between Microcomputer Systems In Heavy Duty Vehicle Applications (SAE/TMC J1708). Other datalinks are in use today, such as SAE J1939 and ISO 15765. Datalinks provide access to the vehicle's on-board electronic components.
Other potential uses for PCs included within the scope of this RP are:
- Tracking vehicle and component maintenance records.
- Obtaining log data from trip recorders.
- Delivering service procedures and other functions electronically.
This RP offers basic guidance only. More information on understanding PCs and their application is available from fleet information system or data processing personnel, and local computer dealers.
