Software residing in ECUs is defined as "firmware" as well as "settings":
- Firmware - Non-modifiable software that resides on the ECU.
- Settings - Modifiable software settings that reside on the ECU.
Function names for software applications residing on the PC include:
- Reprogram - The process of replacing or modifying existing firmware.
- Recalibrate - The process of replacing or modifying existing ECU settings.
- View - The process of displaying information.
- Snapshot - The output produced as a result of the process of recording vehicle data bus data based upon a user request or preconditioned activity in the ECU.
- Diagnostic Test - The process to provide access to diagnostic routines available on the controller or system being monitored, or provided in an automated fashion by the ECU.
Data is any information generated by the firmware or settings, such as:
- Emissions-related DTCs.
- Real-time data - The databus activity displayed as broadcast in a viewing screen.
- Stored Data - Data that has been stored by the ECU or PC application for historical purposes.
