Test D: Incorrect Key Code Received/Unprogrammed Key

NOTE: Large metallic objects, a second Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) ignition key, or devices such as electronic credit cards on the same key ring may cause vehicle starting problem and possibly set this code. Ensure customers encoded ignition key is an approved Ford encoded ignition key. Encoded keys from Rotunda, Ilco, and Strattec are also approved keys.
NOTE: Encoded ignition keys must be Ford approved encoded Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) ignition keys. Unapproved PATS keys do not always operate correctly over different temperature ranges.
  1. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using NGS tester, clear continuous DTCs. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Retrieve continuous PCM DTCs. If DTC B1602 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1602 is not retrieved, system is okay at this time. Verify all customer encoded ignition keys are programmed by attempting to start vehicle with all other encoded ignition keys.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Cut a new encoded ignition key. Using NEW key, turn ignition switch to ON position. Program new encoded ignition key. See KEY PROGRAMMING - WITHOUT USING 2 PROGRAMMED KEYS  under PROGRAMMING. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Retrieve continuous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If DTC B1602 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC B1602 is not retrieved, system is okay at this time. If any other DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Install a new Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) transceiver. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION  . Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using NGS tester, clear continuous DTCs. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Retrieve continuous DTCs. If any DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no DTCs are retrieved, system is okay at this time.
