Disassembly And Assembly Of Subassemblies: Piston: Assembly

  1. Lubricate the piston pin, piston bore and connecting rod bore.
    • Use Super Premium SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G.

  2. CAUTION: Make sure the "W" mark on the piston and the connecting rod are on the same side before assembly.
  3. Position the piston, piston pin, and connecting rod in a press.
    1. Position the connecting rod.
    2. Position the piston.
    3. Position the piston pin.
    4. Position the special tool.

  4. Using the special tool and a press, press the piston pin into the piston and connecting rod until the piston pin is centered.

  5. Install the two piston pin retainers.

    NOTE: The connecting rod should fall under its own weight.

  7. Check the connecting rod oscillating torque.
  8. CAUTION: After the upper and lower oil control rings are installed, make sure the oil control rings and spacer turn freely.
    CAUTION: If a punch mark exists on the piston rings, install the piston rings with the punch mark facing the top of the piston. If no punch mark exists, the piston rings can be mounted with either side up.
    CAUTION: Apply Super Premium SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G to the piston rings and install.
    NOTE: The upper and lower oil control rings are the same and can be installed with either face up.
    1. Install the oil control ring spacer.
    2. Install the oil control rings.
    3. Install the second compression ring.
    4. Install the top compression ring.

  9. Align the piston ring end gaps.
    1. Identify the front of piston.
    2. Position the oil control ring spacer end gap.
    3. Position the first piston ring end gap and upper oil control ring end gap.
    4. Position the lower oil control ring end gap.
    5. Position the second piston ring end gap.
