Valve Spring: Removal

NOTE: If the valve or valve seat has not been damaged, valve springs and valve stem seals may be replaced by holding the affected valve against its valve seat using compressed air. Use a compressor air line and an adapter installed in the appropriate spark plug hole. A minimum of 965 kPa (140 psi) line pressure is required. If air pressure does not hold the valve shut, the valve is damaged and the cylinder head must be removed and disassembled.
NOTE: The appropriate piston must be at top dead center (TDC) when removing the valve spring to prevent the valve from falling into the cylinder.
  1. Remove the tappets from the applicable cylinder head. For additional information, refer to VALVE TAPPET .
  2. Remove the applicable spark plug.
  3. Using the special tools, remove the valve collects.
    1. Compress the valve spring.
    2. Remove the valve collects.
