Engine - 3.3L: Installation: Engine

CAUTION: The torque converter must remain at the correct installation depth throughout the entire installation procedure.
NOTE: Apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly to the inner and outer surface of the converter hub.
NOTE: The torque converter studs must be aligned with the flywheel holes before any transaxle bolts are installed.
  1. Remove the engine from the engine stand.

  2. Align the engine and transaxle.
  3. Install the upper transaxle to engine bolts.

  4. NOTE: The torque converter may need to be rotated to access all of the bolts.

  5. Install the torque converter bolts.
  6. Install the transverse member.
    1. Position the transverse member.
    2. Install the RH engine mount bolts.

  7. Install the LH engine support insulator bolts.

  8. Install the engine to transaxle braces.
    1. Install the transaxle to engine braces.
    2. Install the transaxle inspection cover.
    3. Install the lower transaxle to engine bolts.

  9. Install the LH transaxle to engine bracket bolts.

  10. Install the RH transaxle to engine bracket and exhaust outlet pipe bracket bolts.

  11. Install the starter motor.
    1. Position the starter motor.
    2. Install the bolts.

  12. Position the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.

  13. Install the CKP sensor heat shield.
    1. Position the CKP sensor heat shield.
    2. Install the nut.

  14. Raise the powertrain into the vehicle.
  15. Install the transverse member bolts.

  16. Install the front transaxle support insulator through bolt.

  17. Install the rear transaxle support bracket nuts.

  18. Remove the powertrain lift from under the powertrain assembly.

  19. Connect the transaxle ground electrical connector.

  20. Install the halfshafts. For additional information, refer to AXLE SHAFTS .
  21. Install the flexible pipe.
  22. Install the lower A/C compressor bolts.
    1. Position the A/C compressor.
    2. Install the bolts.

  23. Install the rear power steering pump bolt.

  24. NOTE: Rotate the power steering pump pulley to access the mounting bolts.

  25. Install the four power steering pump bolts.
  26. Install the power steering drive belt.

  27. Adjust the power steering drive belt tension. For additional information, refer to SPECIFICATIONS & DRIVE BELT ROUTING .
  28. Install the generator drive belt.

  29. Adjust the generator drive belt tension. For additional information, refer to SPECIFICATIONS & DRIVE BELT ROUTING .
  30. Tighten the two generator to bracket bolts.

  31. Connect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.

  32. If equipped, connect the engine coolant heater electrical connector.

  33. Install the generator wiring bracket screw.

  34. Connect the generator electrical connections.
    1. Install the B -terminal screw.
    2. Connect the generator electrical connector.
    3. Install the generator ground screw.

  35. Connect the oil pressure sender electrical connector.

  36. Connect the transaxle cooler lines to the transaxle.

  37. Connect the transaxle connections.
    1. Connect the transaxle range (TR) sensor electrical connector.
    2. Install the shift cable to the bracket.
    3. Install the shift cable nut.

  38. Install the RH side splash shield.
    1. Position the splash shield.
    2. Install the bolts.

  39. Install the LH side splash shield.
    1. Position the splash shield.
    2. Install the bolts.

  40. Install the engine splash shield.
  41. Install the wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to WHEELS & TIRES .
  42. Install the upper A/C compressor bolts.

  43. Install the A/C compressor drive belt.

  44. Adjust the A/C compressor drive belt tension. For additional information, refer to SPECIFICATIONS & DRIVE BELT ROUTING .
  45. Connect the brake booster vacuum hose to the bulkhead junction.

  46. Connect the heater hoses to the engine.

  47. Install the engine ground cable bolt.

  48. Connect the lower radiator hose to the coolant crossover tube.

  49. Connect the upper radiator hose to the radiator.

  50. Connect the throttle and speed control cables.
    1. Install the cable end jam nuts.
    2. Connect the throttle and speed control cables to the throttle body.

  51. Adjust the throttle cable.
  52. Adjust the speed control cable. For additional information, refer to VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL .
  53. Connect the vacuum hose.

  54. Attach the front engine wiring harness to the bracket.

  55. Attach the main bulkhead connector to the bracket.

  56. Connect the main bulkhead wiring harness electrical connector.
    1. Connect the main bulkhead wiring harness electrical connector.
    2. Install the main bulkhead wiring harness electrical connector bolt.

  57. Connect the distributor wiring electrical connectors.

  58. NOTE: Install the three ties holding the wire in place.

  59. Connect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
  60. Connect the A/C compressor electrical connectors.
    1. Connect the A/C compressor clutch electrical connector.
    2. Connect the A/C compressor high pressure cutout electrical connector.

  61. Connect the coolant temperature sensor electrical connector.

  62. Connect the vapor canister purge vacuum line.

  63. Connect the fuel lines.
    1. Position the fuel supply line.
    2. Install the bolts.
    3. Connect the fuel return line.

  64. Connect the emission control components.
    1. Connect the manifold absolute pressure/barometric pressure (MAP/ BARO) sensor electrical connector.
    2. Connect the MAP/ BARO sensor vacuum hose.
    3. Connect the vapor canister purge test port.

  65. Connect the electrical connectors.
    • Connect the valve body wiring harness electrical connector.
    • Connect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.

  66. Connect the starter motor wiring harness electrical connector.

  67. Connect the electrical connectors.
    • Connect the rear engine harness connector.
    • Connect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.

  68. Install the engine air cleaner outlet tube.
  69. Fill the engine with Super Premium SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G to the specified level.
  70. Fill the engine cooling system. Refer to ENGINE COOLING .
