Main Control - Pump: Removal

    All vehicles 

  1. Place the transaxle range selector lever in the PARK position.
  2. Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  3. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor and the breather tubes.

  4. Remove the engine air cleaner and intake tube.

  5. Remove the air filter assembly.

  6. Disconnect the electrical connectors.

  7. Disconnect the electrical connector.

  8. Remove the power steering line bracket.

  9. Remove the electrical connector bracket.

  10. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor connector.

  11. 3.0L 4V engines 

  12. Remove the upper cowl assembly.
    1. Remove the wiper.
    2. Remove the clips.
    3. Remove the upper cowl assembly.

  13. Remove the lower cowl assembly.

  14. Remove the rear support brace.
    1. Remove the bolt.
    2. Remove the nut.
    3. Remove the rear support brace.

  15. Install the rear engine lifting bracket in the same location where the top bolt was removed from the rear support brace.

  16. 3.0L 2V engines 

  17. Install the engine lifting bracket on the right (back) hand side of the engine.

  18. Install the engine lifting bracket on the left (front) hand side of the engine.

  19. 3.0L 4V engines 

  20. Remove the nut for the cooling tube.

  21. Install the engine lifting bracket.

  22. Install the Engine Support Bar.

  23. All vehicles 

  24. Remove the six upper bolts from the transaxle side pan.

  25. Raise the vehicle. For additional information, refer to JACKING & LIFTING .
  26. Remove the LH wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to WHEELS & TIRES .
  27. Remove the five LH front inner fender splash shield retainers.

  28. Remove the LH transaxle support and insulator. For additional information, refer to TRANSAXLE SUPPORT INSULATOR .
  29. It will be necessary to lower the left side of the subframe to remove the pan through the wheel well.

  30. Remove the LH lower ball joint nut.

  31. Using the special tools, disconnect the LH ball joint from the lower arm.

  32. CAUTION: Use extreme care not to damage boot seal. Do not use power tools to tighten the nut, or bearing and seal damage can result. Install nut using the hex hold feature to prevent the stud from rotating.

  33. Remove the two nuts and disconnect the front stabilizer bar links.
  34. Position the boot out of the way.

  35. Remove the bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft coupling. Discard the bolt.

  36. Loosen the RH front engine mount nut.

  37. Loosen the two subframe bolts on the RH side and remove the two subframe bolts on the LH side, using a screw jack to support and lower the subframe to access the transmission pan.
  38. Remove the remaining bolts and remove the transaxle side pan and gasket.

  39. CAUTION: Do not pull on the wires or the electrical connectors. Damage to the connectors will result.

  40. Lift the locking tab and disconnect the electrical connectors.
  41. Position the transaxle wiring harness out of the way.
  42. CAUTION: Do not remove the two bolts that hold the pump assembly and main control valve body together as the pump assembly may fall from the main control valve body.
    CAUTION: Only 4 of the 6 pump cover bolts need to be removed.

  43. Remove the bolts.
  44. Disconnect the manual linkage.
  45. Remove the main pump assembly and the main control valve body by carefully sliding it off the pump shaft.
