Pinpoint Test E: Excessive Steering Wheel Play

  1. E1 CHECK THE STEERING COLUMN BEARING 
    • Inspect the steering column mounting fasteners and bearing for looseness.
    • Are the fasteners and bearing OK? 

    Yes  : GO to E2.

    No  : TIGHTEN the steering column mounting fasteners or INSTALL a new steering column. REFER to STEERING COLUMN .

  2. E2 CHECK THE STEERING LINKAGE FOR LOOSENESS 
      WARNING: If equipped with fire suppression system, depower the system. For important safety warnings and procedures, refer to FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM .
    • If equipped with fire suppression system, depower the system.
    • Carry out the STEERING LINKAGE  component test.
    • Is the steering linkage OK? 

    Yes  : REFER to SUSPENSION SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION to diagnose the suspension components. If equipped with fire suppression system, GO to E3.

    No  : INSTALL new steering linkage components as necessary. REFER to POWER STEERING . If equipped with fire suppression system, GO to E3.

  3. E3 REPOWER THE FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM 
      WARNING: If equipped with fire suppression system, repower the system. For important safety warnings and procedures, refer to FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM .
    • Verify that the fire suppression system is repowered. Refer to FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM .
    • Is the fire suppression system repowered? 

    Yes  : Fire suppression system repowering is complete.

    No  : REFER to FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM for fire suppression system depowering and repowering procedure.
