Secure engine in installation position to prevent it from falling down. See 11 00 670 SECURING ENGINE IN INSTALLATION POSITION (N73)
Observe safety instructions on raising the vehicle. See 00..... LIFTING VEHICLE WITH A LIFTING PLATFORM
Adhere to the utmost cleanliness. Do not allow any dirt to enter the hydraulic system.
Seal off hydraulic lines with plugs.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Secure engine in installation position . See 11 00 670 SECURING ENGINE IN INSTALLATION POSITION (N73)
- Remove underbody protective plate. See 51 47 490 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING FRONT UNDERBODY PROTECTION and 51 47 491 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING REAR UNDERBODY PROTECTION
- Remove air duct for brake ventilation on both sides. See 35 11 000 REMOVING AND INSTALLING MOUNTING BLOCK FOR PEDALS
- Remove reinforcement plate . See 31 10 010 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING REINFORCEMENT PLATE
- If necessary, remove steering gear cover on both sides. See POWER STEERING GEAR
- Remove universal joint from power steering gear . See 32 31 211 REPLACING UNIVERSAL JOINT FOR LOWER SECTION OF STEERING SPINDLE
- Disconnect plug connection on Servotronic converter
- Disconnect plug connection from ride-height sensor
- If necessary, disconnect vacuum line from electrically operated valve to engine mounts at T-piece
- If necessary, disconnect pressure line for power steering from front axle carrier
Version with Dynamic Drive:
Draw off and dispose off hydraulic fluid from fluid reservoir.
Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations
Remove bottom right wheel arch trim. See 51 71... REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING FRONT BOTTOM RIGHT WHEEL ARCH TRIM
Remove underbody panelling cover on right. See 51 47... REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING LEFT OR RIGHT UNDERBODY PANELING
Release nut (1) for Dynamic Drive pressure line.
Tightening torque 37 14 13AZ. See 37 14 ELECTRIC COMPONENTS
Release nut (2) for Dynamic Drive return line.
Tightening torque 37 14 21AZ. See 37 14 ELECTRIC COMPONENTS
Release nuts (3) for pressure lines to front axle oscillating motor.
Tightening torque 37 14 13AZ. See 37 14 ELECTRIC COMPONENTS
If necessary, position special tool 00 2 040 with a 2nd person helping on workshop jack 00 2 030 . See 00 2 030 UNIVERSAL HYDRO-LIFTER BASIC UNIT and 00 2 040 BASIC TAKE-UP FIXTURE
Insert special tools 31 4 011 and 31 4 012 into corresponding mountings of special tool 00 2 040 . See 00 2 040 BASIC TAKE-UP FIXTURE
Danger of injury!
Failure to comply with the following instructions may result in the vehicle slipping off the lifting platform and critically injuring other persons.
When supporting components, make sure that
- the vehicle can no longer be raised or lowered
- the vehicle does not lift off the locating plates on the lifting platform
Align special tool 00 2 040 to front axle carrier. See 00 2 040 BASIC TAKE-UP FIXTURE
If necessary, lower special tool 33 3 274.
Support front axle carrier by raising special tool 00 2 040 . See 00 2 040 BASIC TAKE-UP FIXTURE
Release screws (1, 2).
Lower front axle carrier.
Installation:
Check threads for damage; if necessary, repair with Helicoil thread inserts. See 31 00... NOTES ON REPAIRING THREADS
Tighten down screws (1) and then screws (2).
Tightening torque 31 10 1AZ. See 31 10 FRONT AXLE SUSPENSION
After installation:
- Version with Dynamic Drive:
- Fill and bleed hydraulic system . See 32 13 006 BLEEDING POWER STEERING (VERSION WITH DYNAMIC DRIVE)
- Check pipe connections for leaks
- Carry out steering angle sensor adjustment . See 61 31 996 CARRY OUT STEERING ANGLE SENSOR ADJUSTMENT
- If necessary, carry out initial Dynamic Drive operation . See 37 10 001 INITIAL OPERATION WITH TEST RUN OF DYNAMIC DRIVE
