Ignition Coil Check (Eclipse, Eclipse Spyder, Galant & Outlander 2.4L, Lancer, Lancer Evolution VIII & Montero)

NOTE: All 2.4L models are equipped with a built-in ignition power transistor as part of the ignition coil.

Measure secondary coil resistance between the high-voltage terminals of the ignition coil. See IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE  table.

NOTE: An analog-type ohmmeter should be used.
CAUTION: This test must be performed quickly (in less than 10 seconds) to prevent coil from burning and ignition power transistor from breaking.

To check primary coil and ignition power transistor continuity, connect the negative probe of the ohmmeter to terminal No. 1. As described in PRIMARY COIL & IGNITION POWER TRANSISTOR CONTINUITY CHECK  table, perform a continuity check on the ignition coil and power transistor. Connect and disconnect 1.5V battery between terminals No. 2 and 3, and observe the ohmmeter for continuity. See Fig 1. If results are not within specification, replace the primary coil and ignition power transistor assembly.
