DTC Confirmation Test (Using Generic Scan Tool)
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Infiniti G35. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING:
NEVER remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Serious burns could be caused by high pressure fluid escaping from the radiator. Wrap a thick cloth around cap. Carefully remove the cap by turning it a quarter turn to allow built-up pressure to escape. Then turn the cap all the way off.
NOTE:
Use this procedure to check the overall function of the cooling fan. During this check, a DTC might not be confirmed.
NOTE:
If a DTC confirmation test has been previously performed, turn ignition off and wait at least 10 seconds before performing next DTC confirmation test.
- Allow engine to cool. Check the coolant level in the reservoir tank and radiator. If coolant level is okay, go to next step. If the coolant level in the reservoir tank and/or radiator is below the correct range, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE .
- If customer added coolant, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . If customer did not add coolant, go to next step.
- Start engine. Then, go to next step.
- If cooling fan operates, go to next step. If cooling fan does not operate, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE .
- Turn ignition off. Then, go to next step.
- Disconnect Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor harness connector F13. Then, go to next step.
- Connect a 200 ohm resistor between ECT sensor harness connector F13 terminals. Then, go to next step.
- Start engine and ensure cooling fan operates at low speed. If fan operates at low speed, go to next step. If fan does not operate at low speed, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE .
- Turn ignition off. Then, go to next step.
- Remove 200 ohm resistor from ECT sensor harness connector F13. Then, go to next step.
- Connect a 150 ohm resistor between ECT sensor harness connector F13 terminals. Then, go to next step.
- Restart engine. Ensure cooling fan operates at high speed. If fan operates at high speed, go to next step. If fan does not operate at high speed, go to DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE .
- Turn ignition off. Then, go to next step.
- If cooling fan operates correctly, no problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
CAUTION:
DO NOT overheat engine.
