Battery Rundown Protection
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am and 1999 Oldsmobile Alero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
BCM helps to prevent inadvertent battery rundown from situations such as courtesy lights left on. The BCM monitors current draw on the courtesy light circuit and will shut power to the courtesy lights to minimize battery drain. The BCM will turn off the inadvertent power relay after 20 minutes. The 20 minute countdown starts after one or more of the following actions occurs:
- The ignition switch is turned from ON or START position to UNLOCK, LOCK or ACC position.
- Illuminated entry is activated (door open).
- Interior lights switch is turned on.
- Under hood light is turned on.
- Courtesy lights are activated.
- Dome light is activated.
- Glove box light is activated.
- Reading (map) light is activated.
- Rear view mirror lights are activated.
- The ignition switch is turned from ON or START position to UNLOCK, LOCK or ACC position.
- Illuminated entry is activated (door open).
- Interior lights switch is turned on.
- Trunk or hatch is opened or closed.
- Courtesy lights are activated.
- Dome light is activated.
To return BCM to normal operation after BCM has commanded off the inadvertent power relay and shut the courtesy lights off, shut off all interior lights and close all doors, hood and trunk and turn ignition switch from OFF to ON position. Courtesy lights will operate as normal.
