Remote Function Actuator (RFA) Input/Output Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Oldsmobile Aurora and 1997 Buick Riviera. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect RFA module connector. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between RFA module connector terminal E11 (Light Green wire) and ground while holding left or right front door lock switch in unlock position. If resistance is less than one ohm with left or right front door lock switch held in unlock position and infinite when not in unlock position, go to step 3). If resistance is more than one ohm with left or right front door lock switch held in unlock position and not infinite when not in unlock position, go to next step.
  2. Check for open or short to ground in Light Green wire between RFA module and left or right front door lock switch. Check for open in Black/White wire between left or right front door lock switch and ground. Check left or right front door lock switch for poor connections. If Light Green wire, Black/White wire and connections are okay, replace suspect door lock switch.
  3. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between RFA module connector terminal F10 (Light Blue/Black wire) and ground while operating luggage compartment lid tamper switch. If resistance is less than 5 ohms while operating luggage compartment lid tamper switch and infinite when not operating switch, go to step 5). If resistance is more than 5 ohms while operating luggage compartment lid tamper switch and not infinite when not operating switch, go to next step.
  4. Check for open or short to ground in Light Blue/Black wire between RFA module and luggage compartment lid tamper switch. Check for open in Black wire between luggage compartment lid tamper switch and ground. Check luggage compartment lid tamper switch for poor connections. If Light Blue/Black wire, Black wire and connections are okay, replace luggage compartment lid tamper switch.
  5. Connect a fused jumper wire between RFA module connector F5 (Dark Green wire) and ground. If SECURITY indicator illuminates, go to step 7). If SECURITY indicator does not illuminate, turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between RFA module connector terminal F5 (Dark Green wire) and ground. If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, repair short to voltage in Dark Green wire.
  6. Check if any other instrument cluster warning indicators illuminate. If no other warning indicators illuminate, diagnose instrument cluster. If other warning indicators illuminate, check 10-amp I/P No. 1 fuse in right rear electrical center located under rear seat. Check for open or short to ground in Orange wire between instrument cluster and right rear electrical center. Check for open in Dark Green wire between instrument cluster and RFA module. Check instrument cluster for poor connections.
  7. Using DVOM, measure voltage between RFA module connector terminal E2 (Black wire) and ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check 20-amp HORN fuse in right front underhood relay center located in right front side of engine compartment. Check for open or short to ground in Red wire between 20-amp HORN fuse and horn relay, both located in right front underhood relay center. Check for open in Black wire between horn relay and RFA module. If fuse, Red wire and Black wire are okay, replace horn relay.
  8. Using DVOM, measure voltage between RFA module connector terminal F4 (Black/White wire) and ground. If battery voltage is present, check RFA module for poor connections. If connections are okay, replace RFA module. If battery voltage is not present, check for open or short to ground in Black/White wire between RFA module and lamp control module located behind left kick panel. Check lamp control module for poor connections. If Black/White wire and connections are okay, replace lamp control module.
