Injection Timing

  1. Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 piston reaches TDC of compression stroke. With upper cover removed, check that timing belt is properly tensioned and that timing marks are aligned. See Fig 1 . With camshaft cover removed, check that fixing plate (J-29761) fits smoothly into slot on rear of camshaft, then remove fixing plate.

  2. With injection lines removed, remove distributor head screw and washer, located between injection lines on pump. Install static timing gauge (J-29763) on pump opening and set lift at 0.04" (1 mm). Rotate crankshaft to bring No. 1 piston to a point between 45-60° BTDC. See Fig 2 . Zero dial indicator.
  3. Turn crankshaft until 18° BTDC line on damper pulley is in alignment with pointer. Dial indicator reading should be 0.02" (0.5 mm). Turn crankshaft in normal direction of rotation, if reading on dial indicator deviates, hold crankshaft at 18° BTDC position and loosen nuts on injection pump flange.

  4. Move the injection pump to a point where proper dial indicator reading is reached and tighten pump flange nuts. Recheck reading and adjust, if necessary. Install distributor screw and washer. Install camshaft cover, fuel injection lines and upper cover. Adjust idle speeds.
