Conditions For Enabling Cruise Control

- When vehicle speed is more than 25 MPH (40 KM/H).
- When PARK, REVERSE, NEUTRAL, or 1st gear is not indicated.
- When an over/undercharged battery condition does not exist.
- With normal engine RPM.
- Without high engine RPM (fuel cut-off).
- Perform CRUISE CONTROL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK . Once test has been performed, go to next step.
- Turn off the ignition. Disconnect the cruise control module harness connector. Turn on the ignition with the engine off. Probe the ignition positive voltage circuit of the cruise control module harness connector with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. If the test lamp illuminates, go to next step. If not, go to step 36.
- Probe the ignition positive voltage circuit of the cruise control module harness connector with a test lamp that is connected to the ground circuit of the cruise control module. If the test lamp illuminates, go to next step. If not, go to step 37.
- Turn on the ignition, with the engine off. Turn off the cruise control. Probe the cruise control On/Off, Set/Coast, and the Resume/Accelerate switch signal circuits with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. If the test lamp illuminates on any of the circuits, go to step 16. If not, go to next step.
- Turn on the ignition, with the engine off. Turn on the cruise control. Probe the cruise control On/Off switch signal circuit with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. If the test lamp illuminates, go to next step. If not, go to step 17.
- Probe the cruise control Set/Coast Switch signal circuit with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. If the test lamp illuminates, go to next step. If not, go to step 19.
- Probe the cruise control Resume/Accelerate switch signal circuit with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. Press and hold the Resume/Accel switch. If the test lamp illuminates, go to next step. If not, go to step 20.
- Probe the cruise release switch cancel signal circuit with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. If the test lamp illuminates, go to next step. If not, go to step 21.
- Press the brake pedal while monitoring the test lamp. If the test lamp illuminates, go to step 22. If not, go to next step.
- Probe the brakelight switch circuit with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. If the test lamp illuminates, go to step 23. If not, go to next step.
- Press the brake pedal while monitoring the test lamp. If the test lamp illuminates, go to next step. If not, go to step 24.
- Probe the cruise control inhibit signal circuit with a test lamp that is connected to B+. If the test lamp illuminates, go to step 25. If not, go to next step.
- Use a scan tool in order to command the cruise Inhibit/Enable off. If the test lamp illuminates, go to next step. If not, go to step 26.
- Probe the cruise engaged signal circuit with a DMM that is connected to a good ground. If the voltage measure battery voltage, go to next step. If not, go to step 27.
- Check the speedometer for proper operation. If the speedometer operates properly, go to step 28.
- Test the circuit that illuminated the test lamp for a short to voltage. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 34.
- Test the cruise control On/Off switch signal circuit for an open or high resistance. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to next step.
- Test the ignition positive voltage circuit for an open or a high resistance. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 34.
- Test the cruise control Set/Coast switch signal circuit for an open or a high resistance. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 34.
- Test the cruise control Resume/Accelerate switch signal circuit for an open or a high resistance. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 34.
- Test the cruise release switch cancel signal circuit for an open or a high resistance. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 29.
- Test the cruise release switch cancel signal circuit for a short to voltage. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 29.
- Test the brakelight switch circuit for a short to voltage. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 30.
- Test the brakelight switch circuit for an open or a high resistance. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 30.
- Test the cruise control inhibit signal circuit for a short to ground. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 33.
- Test the cruise control inhibit signal circuit for an open, a high resistance, or a short to voltage. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 33.
- Test the cruise control engaged signal circuit for an open, a high resistance, or a short to voltage. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 33.
- Test the vehicle speed sensor signal circuit for an open or a high resistance between the PCM and the cruise control module. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 35.
- Inspect The Cruise Release Switch For Proper Adjustment. See CRUISE RELEASE SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 31.
- Inspect the brakelight switch for proper adjustment. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 32.
- Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the cruise release switch. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 38.
- Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the brakelight switch. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 39.
- Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the PCM. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 40.
- Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the cruise control switch. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 41.
- Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the cruise control module. If you found and corrected the condition, go to step 43. If not, go to step 42.
- Repair the ignition positive voltage circuit of the cruise control module. Once the repair is completed, go to step 43.
- Repair the ground circuit of the cruise control module. Once the repair is completed, go to step 43.
- Replace the cruise release switch. Once the replacement is completed, go to step 43.
- Replace the brakelight switch. Once the replacement is completed, go to step 43.
- Replace the PCM. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Program the PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING. Once the replacement is completed, go to step 43.
- Replace the cruise control switch. Once the replacement is completed, go to step 43.
- Replace the cruise control module. Once the replacement is completed, go to step 43.
- Operate the vehicle within the conditions for cruise control operation. If the cruise control does not operate correctly, go to step 2.
