Replacing Triggering Unit

NOTE: Voltage drop
  • Risk of irreparable damage to control unit
  • Risk of damage to control unit
  • Fault entries in the control unit
  • Coding in the control unit is aborted
  • Malfunctions in control unit, even during programming

→ Prior to disconnecting the control unit, switch off ignition and remove ignition key.

→ Ensure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming.

→ Connect a battery charger with a current rating of at least → Nominal value: 40 A  to the vehicle battery.

Information 

The PIWIS Tester II 9818  instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases.

The procedure described here has been structured in general terms. Different text or additional information may appear in PIWIS Tester II 9818  .

  1. Connect the Porsche System Tester to the vehicle and start the System Tester. Switch on ignition.
  2. Select the vehicle type under Diagnostics  .
  3. When the Overview  is displayed, start the Control Unit Search  by pressing [F12].
  4. Once the control unit search is complete, press [F7].
  5. Select Maintenance Of Vehicle Data  and press [F12].
  6. Compare the displayed data with the vehicle equipment and write it down if necessary.
    WARNING: Incorrect handling of airbag units
    • Triggering of airbag unit
    • System faults can occur

    → Switch off ignition and remove ignition key or remote control (hand-held transmitter).

    → A voltage supply (e.g. battery charger) must not be connected to the external power supply/jump-lead starting terminals.

    → Disconnect the battery and insulate the ground strap so that all contact with a ground carrier is avoided.

    → Wait 1 minute after disconnecting the battery.

    → Only detach connector on the triggering unit after the waiting time has elapsed.

    → Make sure that no foreign objects are located in front of the airbag unit during installation.

    → Replace damaged parts during removal.

    → Always position airbag units so that the blow-out opening is facing upwards, e.g. crest on driver's airbag.

    → Do not position anything on the airbag units.

    → If removed for an extended period, the airbag units must be stored in a safe place.

    → Airbag units must not come into contact with grease, oil, detergents, liquids, or similar substances.

    → Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 90°.

    → Do not remove the short-circuit spring on the plug-in contacts.

    → Ignition and preparations may only be carried out by skilled staff, supervised by a second responsible person.

    → Before disposal, the airbag unit must be rendered harmless by electrical ignition performed in accordance with all precautionary measures, thereby preventing it from being used incorrectly.

  7. Switch off ignition and disconnect the charger from the power connection and the ground strap from the battery.
  8. The airbag control unit can be replaced after a wait time of at least 1 minute. → 695319 REMOVING AND INSTALLING TRIGGERING UNIT FOR AIRBAG 
  9. Connect the ground strap for the battery and switch the charger on again.
  10. Switch on ignition.
  11. Switch to Online Teaching Function  .
  12. Select Component Protection  and press [F12].
  13. Select The Required Vehicle  and press [F12].
  14. Select Airbag Component Protection  and press [F12].
  15. Proceed in accordance with the instructions on the Tester.
  16. Once airbag component protection has been taught successfully, switch back to the Diagnostics  function and Select The Required Vehicle  . Then press [F12].
  17. When the Overview  is displayed, start the Control Unit Search  by pressing [F12].
  18. Once the control unit search is complete, press [F7].
  19. Select Maintenance Of Vehicle Data  and press [F12].
  20. Compare the vehicle data with the vehicle equipment and the data you read out earlier. Change the data if necessary.
  21. Select the Airbag  control unit in the Overview  and press [F12].
  22. Select Maintenance/Repairs  and Lock  and press [F12].
  23. Read the warnings displayed on the Tester and proceed according to the instructions on the Tester.
  24. Once you have locked the airbag control unit, the occupant detection/seat occupancy detection control unit must be calibrated on vehicles with the country variant C02 (USA, Canada, Mexico).
    1. 24.1. Select the Maintenance/Repairs  menu. Then select Calibrate Seat Occupancy Detection  and complete the calibration process according to the instructions on the Tester.
  25. Switch off ignition and remove the handheld transmitter from the ignition lock.
  26. Insert the handheld transmitter back into the ignition lock and switch on ignition.
  27. Read out the fault memory and erase it if necessary.
  28. Perform function test: Switch the ignition off and then on again. The airbag warning light in the instrument cluster comes on and must go off again after a few seconds.
