Knock Sensor: Description and Operation

Knock sensors are not used on all engines. Refer to system wiring schematics for specific applications.

The cylinder head mounted knock sensor is used to signal the ECU during times of engine detonation. When detonation does occur, the ECU retards the ignition timing advance to the applicable cylinder(s) as necessary.
