Code P012, No Distributor Reference Signal: Action

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Cadillac DeVille. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

PCM turns on Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL).

NOTE: Test numbers refer to numbers on diagnostic chart.
  1. Checks for proper output of ignition system. If voltmeter reads 0.5-2.8 volts, ignition control module is receiving pick-up coil signal and is producing reference pulses.
  2. Checks for proper ground at PCM and ignition control module.
  3. Checks for reference pulses on circuit No. 430 from ignition control module to PCM. If PCM terminal No. 1D8 has 0.5-2.8 volts, PCM is receiving reference pulses.
  4. Checks ignition control module operation. If ignition control module will produce spark, then pick-up coil and ignition control module are okay.
