1991 - 1995 Saturns equipped with cruise control

CONDITION

Some customers may comment that their vehicle speed fluctuates when driving at speeds above 103 km/h (64 mph) with the cruise control engaged.

CAUSE

When the cruise control is engaged at speeds between 103 and 117 km/h (64 and 73 mph), the cruise control calibration may cause speed fluctuations. The speed may fluctuate more on a hilly terrain.

CORRECTION

Inspect cruise control module assembly for part number printed on label. Use a mirror in order to view the right side of the cruise control module assembly.

If the part number on the label of the cruise control module assembly has one of the following non-affected part numbers, refer to diagnostics in the "Cruise Control" section of the "Electronic Engine Controls Service Manual."

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Make sure ignition is Off.
2. Remove connector and disconnect cruise control module assembly electrical connector.
3. Disconnect cruise control module assembly cable from accelerator pedal.
4. Remove nuts attaching cruise control module assembly to steering column bracket and remove cruise control module assembly. Make sure to leave rubber isolator grommets in place.
5. Install new cruise control module assembly to steering column bracket using three nuts. Refer to "Part Requirements" in this bulletin for the correct cruise control module assembly part number to use.
   NOTE: When installing the cruise control module assembly, make sure that the rubber grommets are in place on the steering column bracket and that the cruise control module studs go through the rubber grommets. Torque: 5 N-m (44 in-lbs)
6. Connect cruise control module assembly cable to accelerator pedal.
7. Connect cruise control module assembly electrical connector.
   CAUTION: ADJUST CRUISE CONTROL MODULE ASSEMBLY CABLE EACH TIME CRUISE CONTROL MODULE ASSEMBLY IS REMOVED OR REPLACED. THROTTLE OPERATION COULD BE AFFECTED.
8. Connect portable diagnostic tool (PDT) to data link connector (DLC).
9. While observing the PDT, gently pull the cruise control module assembly cable adjuster out and turn the adjuster assembly to lengthen or shorten the cruise cable. The cable should be adjusted until the throttle plate is closed. When the throttle plate is closed the PDT will display "O TP SENSOR %."
   • Turn clockwise, when facing the throttle pedal, to shorten the cruise control module assembly cable.
   • Turn counterclockwise, when facing the throttle pedal, to lengthen the cruise control module assembly cable.
10. Once the cruise control module assembly cable is adjusted so that "O TP SENSOR %" is achieved, turn the cruise control module assembly cable adjuster counterclockwise, when facing the throttle pedal, 1/2 turn (two or three clicks) to allow slack in the cruise control module assembly cable.
    NOTE: When correctly adjusted, the cruise control module assembly cable should have 1-2 mm (0.040-0.079 in.) of free play (fore/aft movement).
11. Disconnect PDT from DLC.
12. Verify cruise control system operation.
