Rear Window Defogger System Inspection [07/2015 - ]: Procedure

  1. VERIFY COMBINATION METER DTCS 
    1. Switch the ignition ON (engine off or on).
    2. Perform the DTC inspection for the combination meter using the Techstream.

      Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR [07/2015 - ]

      Body Electrical > Instrument Cluster > Trouble Codes 

    3. Is a DTC displayed?

      Result

      No

    Result:  2

    Yes 

    REPAIR THE MALFUNCTIONING LOCATION ACCORDING TO THE APPLICABLE DTC TROUBLESHOOTING. 

    1. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART [07/2015 - ]

  2. DETERMINE MALFUNCTIONING LOCATION BY PERFORMING PID/DATA MONITOR INSPECTION 
    1. Display the main body ECU PID [Rear Defogger Relay] using the Techstream.

      Refer to DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST [07/2015 - ]

      Body Electrical > Body Control Module > Data List 

      Tester Display
      Rear Defogger Relay
    2. Turn the rear window defogger switch on.
    3. Is the PID value on?

  3. INSPECT REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER SWITCH CONDITION BY INSPECTING AIR CONDITIONING AMPLIFIER 
    1. Perform terminal voltage inspection at air conditioning amplifier terminal D12-14.

      Refer to INSPECTION [07/2015 - ]

    2. Is the voltage normal?

  4. INSPECT AIR CONDITIONING AMPLIFIER CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Disconnect the combination meter connector.
    2. Verify that the air conditioning amplifier connector is disconnected.
    3. Inspect for continuity between air conditioning amplifier terminal D12-14 (vehicle wiring harness side) and body ground.
    4. Is there continuity?

  5. INSPECT AIR CONDITIONING AMPLIFIER CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
    1. Verify that the air conditioning amplifier connector and the combination meter connector are disconnected.
    2. Inspect for continuity between air conditioning amplifier terminal D12-14 (wiring harness side) and combination meter terminal D55-18 (wiring harness side).
    3. Is there continuity?

  6. INSPECT AIR CONDITIONING AMPLIFIER CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO POWER SUPPLY 
    1. Verify that the air conditioning amplifier connector and the combination meter connector are disconnected.
    2. Connect the negative battery cable.

      Refer to INSTALLATION [07/2015 - ]

    3. Switch the ignition ON (engine off or on).
    4. Turn the rear window defogger switch on.
    5. Measure the voltage at air conditioning amplifier terminal D12-14 (vehicle wiring harness side).
    6. Is the voltage less than 1.0 V?

  7. INSPECT REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER RELAY 
    1. Switch the ignition OFF (LOCK).
    2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

      Refer to REMOVAL [07/2015 - ]

    3. Remove the rear window defogger relay.

      Refer to INSPECTION [07/2015 - ]

    4. Inspect the rear window defogger relay.

      Refer to INSPECTION [07/2015 - ]

    5. Is the rear window defogger relay normal?

  8. INSPECT REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER RELAY CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND OR OPEN CIRCUIT 
    1. Verify that the rear window defogger relay is removed.
    2. Connect the negative battery cable.

      Refer to INSTALLATION [07/2015 - ]

    3. Measure the voltage at rear window defogger relay terminals 5 and 1 (vehicle wiring harness side).
    4. Is the voltage B+?

  9. INSPECT REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND OR OPEN CIRCUIT 
    1. Install the rear window defogger relay.
    2. Turn the rear window defogger switch on.
    3. Measure the voltage at rear window defogger terminal E23-1 (vehicle wiring harness side).
    4. Is the voltage B+?

  10. INSPECT REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER 
    1. Inspect the rear window defogger.

    2. Is the rear window defogger normal?

  11. INSPECT MAIN BODY ECU CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND OR OPEN CIRCUIT

    2. Measure the voltage at main body ECU terminal 6C (vehicle wiring harness side).
    3. Is the voltage B+?

  15. REFER TO THE WIRING DIAGRAM AND VERIFY IF THERE IS A COMMON CONNECTOR BETWEEN MAIN BODY ECU TERMINAL 6C AND REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER RELAY TERMINAL 2. 
    1. If there is a common connector:
      • Inspect the common connector and terminals for corrosion, damage, or disconnection and the common wiring harnesses for short to ground or open circuit to determine the malfunctioning location.
      • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location.
    2. If there is no common connector:
      • Repair or replace the wiring harness which is shorted to ground or has an open circuit.
    3. After repair, go to the next step.

  16. REPAIR THE REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER, THEN GO TO STEP 12.

  17. REFER TO THE WIRING DIAGRAM AND VERIFY IF THERE IS A COMMON CONNECTOR BETWEEN REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER RELAY TERMINALS D12-14 AND REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER TERMINAL E23-1. 
    1. If there is a common connector:
      • Inspect the common connector and terminals for corrosion, damage, or disconnection and the common wiring harnesses for short to ground or open circuit to determine the malfunctioning location.
      • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location.
    2. If there is no common connector:
      • Repair or replace the wiring harness which is shorted to ground or has an open circuit.
    3. After repair procedure, go to Step 12.

  18. INSPECT THE DEFOG 40 A FUSE. 
    1. If the fuse is blown:
      1. Refer to the wiring diagram and verify if there is a common connector between DEFOG 40 A fuse and rear window defogger relay terminals 5 and 1.
        1. If there is a common connector:
          1. Inspect the common connector and terminals for corrosion, damage, or disconnection and the common wiring harnesses for short to ground to determine the malfunctioning location.
          2. Repair or replace the malfunctioning location.
        2. If there is no common connector:
          1. Repair or replace the wiring harness which is shorted to ground.
          2. Replace the fuse.
    2. If the fuse is damaged:
      1. Replace the fuse.
    3. If the fuse is normal:
      1. Refer to the wiring diagram and verify if there is a common connector between positive battery terminal and rear window defogger relay terminals 5 and 1.
        1. If there is a common connector:
          1. Inspect the common connector and terminals for corrosion, damage, or disconnection and the common wiring harnesses for an open circuit to determine the malfunctioning location
          2. Repair or replace the malfunctioning location.
      2. If there is no common connector:
        1. Repair or replace the wiring harness which has an open circuit.
    4. Go to Step 12.

  19. REPLACE THE REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER RELAY, THEN GO TO STEP 12.

  21. REFER TO THE WIRING DIAGRAM AND VERIFY IF THERE IS A COMMON CONNECTOR BETWEEN AIR CONDITIONING AMPLIFIER TERMINAL D12-14 AND COMBINATION METER TERMINAL D55-18. 
    1. If there is a common connector:
      • Inspect the common connector and terminals for corrosion, damage, or disconnection and the common wiring harnesses for short to power supply to determine the malfunctioning location.
      • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location.
    2. If there is no common connector:
      • Repair or replace the wiring harness which is shorted to the power supply.
    3. After repair procedure, go to Step 12.

  22. REFER TO THE WIRING DIAGRAM AND VERIFY IF THERE IS A COMMON CONNECTOR BETWEEN AIR CONDITIONING AMPLIFIER TERMINAL D12-14 AND COMBINATION METER TERMINAL D55-18. 
    1. If there is a common connector:
      • Inspect the common connector and terminals for corrosion, damage, or disconnection and the common wiring harnesses for an open circuit to determine the malfunctioning location.
      • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location.
    2. If there is no common connector:
      • Repair or replace the wiring harness which has an open circuit.
    3. After repair procedure, go to Step 12.

    1. If there is a common connector:
      • Inspect the common connector and terminals for corrosion, damage, or disconnection and the common wiring harnesses for short to ground to determine the malfunctioning location.
      • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location.
    2. If there is no common connector:
      • Repair or replace the wiring harness which is shorted to ground.
    3. After repair procedure, go to Step 12.
