Location

The electrical power steering control unit (N68) is mounted to the rack- and-pinion steering's steering gear.

Task

The electrical power steering control unit has the following tasks:

Reading in of sensors and signals
Evaluation of input factors
Actuation of components
Transmission of requests/information

Reading in of sensors and signals

The input factors are read in over the following connections:

Direct line
Interior CAN (CAN B)
Chassis CAN (CAN E)

Direct line

The following sensor is read in via a direct line:

Electric power steering torque sensor (A91 b1)

Interior CAN

The following signals are read in via interior CAN:

Steer Assist request, wheel speeds and steering wheel angle as well as steering angle rate of change from Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4)
"Drive train operational", "Engine running" and engine rpm from MESFI control unit (N3/10) (except 453.091/391/491)
"Drive train operational" from electric vehicle control unit (N127) (only model 453.091/391/491)

Evaluation of input factors

The input factors which are read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor, the relevant components are then actuated and requests/information are output.

Actuation of components

The following component is actuated directly:

Electric power steering actuator motor (A91 m1)

Transmission of requests/information

The following requests/information are sent over the interior CAN:

Request to actuate power steering warning lamp (A1 e70) to instrument cluster (A1) (except model 453.091/391/491 with code K36 (Instrument cluster with 8.9 cm (3.5") color display))
Request for a warning message to instrument cluster (vehicles with code K36 (Instrument cluster with 8.9-cm (3.5") color display))
Diagnosis information to the diagnostic connector (X11/4)
