OBD-II General Scan Tool Procedure: Notes

  1. Open cover and connect OBD-II general scan tool to data link connector located in lower portion of instrument panel, on driver's side. See Fig 1 .
  2. NOTE: For details concerning diagnostic trouble codes, refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
NOTE: Refer to OBD-II general scan tool manufacturer's instruction manual to access generic OBD-II PIDs.
  3. Using OBD-II general scan tool, call up diagnostic trouble code(s) and freeze frame data. OBD-II general scan tool functions consist of:
    • MODE $01 -  Current powertrain diagnostic data. Refers to data denoting current operating condition of analog input/output, digital input/output and/or powertrain system. Support data and PID (Parameter Identification) codes are shown in Fig 2 .
    • NOTE: Refer to OBD-II general scan tool manufacturer's instruction manual to clear or reset emission-related diagnostic MODE $04 information.
    • MODE $02 -  Powertrain freeze frame data. Refers to data denoting operating condition when trouble is sensed by on-board diagnosis system. Support data and PID (Parameter Identification) codes are shown in Fig 3 .
    • MODE $03 -  Emission-related powertrain diagnostic trouble codes. See READING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  for information about data denoting emission-related powertrain diagnostic trouble codes.
    • NOTE: Refer to OBD-II general scan tool manufacturer's instruction manual to clear or reset emission-related diagnostic MODE $04 information.
    • MODE $04 -  Clear/Reset emission-related diagnostic information. Refers to mode used to-clear or reset emission-related diagnostic information (OBD-II trouble diagnostic information).
