ENGINE DIAGNOSTIC

1. CHECK ENGINE START FAILURE. Ask the customer when and how the trouble occurred using the interview check list. < Ref. to , CHECK , Check List for Interviews Start the engine.	Does the engine start?	Go to step 2.	Inspect using "Diagnostics for Engine Starting Failure". < Ref. to , DIAGNOSTICS FOR ENGINE STARTING FAILURES . >
2. CHECK ILLUMINATION OF MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT.	Does the malfunction indicator light illuminate?	Go to step 3.	Inspect using "General Diagnostic Table". < Ref. to , INSPECTION , General Diagnostic Tables. >
3. CHECK INDICATION OF DTC ON DISPLAY. Turn the ignition switch to OFF. Connect the Subaru Select Monitor or OBD-II general scan tool to data link connector. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Read DTC on Subaru Select Monitor or OBD-II general scan tool. NOTE: Subaru Select Monitor For detailed operation procedure, refer to READ DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) . OBD-II general scan tool For detailed operation procedures, refer to the OBD-II general scan tool instruction manual .	Is DTC displayed on the Subaru Select Monitor?	Record the DTC. Repair the trouble cause. < Ref. to , LIST OF DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC). Go to step 4.	Repair the related parts. NOTE: If DTC is not shown on display although the engine warning light illuminates, perform the diagnostics of malfunction indicator light circuit or combination meter. < Ref. to , MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHTS . >
4. PERFORM DIAGNOSIS. Perform the clear memory mode. < Ref. to , CLEAR MEMORY MODE . > Perform the inspection mode. < Ref. to , INSPECTION MODE . >	Is DTC displayed on the Subaru Select Monitor?	Check on "Diagnostic Chart with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)" < Ref. to , DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE WITH DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) . >	Finish the diagnosis.
