DTC P0116 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range / Performance Problem: Description

A thermistor is built into the engine coolant temperature sensor, of which the resistance value varies according to the engine coolant temperature.

The structure of the sensor and its connection to the ECM (included in the hybrid vehicle control ECU) are similar to the intake air temperature sensor.

DTC TROUBLE DETECTION CONDITION CHART

DTC No. DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area
P0116 When either of following conditions is met (2 trip detection logic):
  • When cold engine is started and engine is warmed up, engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change.
  • After engine is warmed up, engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change when engine stopped and then next cold engine start is performed.
  • Thermostat
  • Engine coolant temperature sensor
