Collision Warning System Description And Function (Including Door Open Warning): Notes
Components:
- ADAS control unit
- Multimedia head unit (MHU)
- Multimedia display unit (MDU)/HMI
- S-cam
- Front mid-range radar
Technical Description - Collision Warning:
Forward collision warning (FCW) is a driver assistance system that warns drivers of potential imminent collisions at the front of the vehicle, with objects (vehicles, pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles) potentially intervening in the ego vehicle's current driving path. This feature does not actively intervene in the dynamic driving task.
- FCW is activated when the vehicle's speed is in the range 5 kph-130 kph
- FCW is deactivated when the vehicle's speed is less than 5 kph or more than 130 kph. Or USER sets it to OFF via the HMI
- The function detects obstacles: pedestrians, motor cyclists, cyclists and vehicles, ahead of the ego vehicle.
- The feature takes information from radar and/or cameras to calculate the distance of objects from the ego vehicle in real time
- On the basis of the information from radar and cameras, the function recognizes/classifies obstacles that interfere with the driving path of the ego vehicle, and calculates the time-to-collision with potential collision objects
- Depending on the time-to-collision calculated, the function triggers the appropriate warning stage. There are 3 to 4 warning stages, which could be:
- No warning: T2C > T2C1 (TBD).
- Primary warning: T2C2 <T2C <= T2C1 (TBD).
- Collision warning: T2C3 <T2C <= T2C2 (TBD).
- The driver can set T2C1, T2C2, T2C3 in function setting sensitivity. The warning alarm is activated on the infotainment system.
- The driver can enable or disable FCW function from MHU. The driver can change the warning sensitivity via menu on MHU. There are three levels: late/normal/early.
- If the function detects any failure of itself or ADAS systems, it triggers a MALFUNCTION warning, and sends it to the infotainment system, to alert the driver. If the ADAS system detects some hardware/software failure that prevents the function from working properly, the 'function not available' alert is sent to HMI/IPC, etc.
The camera(s) and sensors associated with forward collision warning are designed to monitor an approximate area of up to 525 feet (160 meters) in your driving path.
In some situations, the ability of the FCW system to detect objects may be limited:
- Low obstacles
- Narrow objects, such as barrier chains, poles or fences
- Projecting objects, such as trailer draw bars
- Objects with certain surfaces and structures, for instance fabric.
System Architecture Collision Warning:
Additional explanation:
FCW control logic output warnings based on
- 'Front object(s) after fusion'NOTE: (This information tells the position(s) of the front object(s) in the ego lane and crossing object(s))
- 'FCW flag' (note: this information is the ME determination on whether it is an FCW event)
FCW control logic makes an initial determination on whether it is an FCW event using the 'front object(s) after fusion
- Then the FCW control logic compares the initial determination with the FCW flag from ME
Operation: (Use Cases):
- Open the "Driver Aids" app from Home Screen and navigate to Collision Avoidance
- Touch On or Off
- You can change the warning responsiveness to low, normal or high by using the toggle button on the display to select the required levelNOTE: If the FCW system is turned off, then intersection assist will also be turned off and disabled.
The driver can enable or disable FCW function from MHU.
The driver can change the warning responsiveness via the menu on MHU.
There are three levels: low/normal/high.
Forward Collision Warning Stages:
- Stagel: The FCW icon and a warning message are displayed.
- Stage2: A chime sound is heard and a prompt displayed.
- Stage 3: Brakes are primed, a chime sound is heard and a prompt displayed.
