Camshaft Position Sensor

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect CMP sensor 3-pin harness connector. CMP sensor is located on front of cylinder head. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between terminals No. 1 and 3 of harness connector. See Fig 1 . Voltage reading should be 9-14.5 volts. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, go to step  5 .
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Electronic Control Module (ECM) harness connector. Connect VAG 1598/22 test box to ECM wiring harness leaving ECM disconnected. Check resistance between the following CMP sensor connector terminals and VAG test box sockets:
    • CMP sensor connector terminal No. 2 and VAG test box socket 44. See Fig 1 .
    • CMP sensor connector terminal No. 3 and VAG test box socket 56.

Resistance should be 1.5 ohms or less. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, check for and repair open in wiring harness as necessary. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.

  3. Check for high resistance in circuit between CMP sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 and relay panel. See Fig 1 . Also, see ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
  4. Check for CMP sensor circuits for short to each other. Test between circuits as follows:
    • CMP sensor connector terminal No. 3 and VAG test box socket 44. See Fig 1 .
    • CMP sensor connector terminal No. 2 and VAG test box socket 56.

Resistance should be infinity. If resistance is as specified, and voltage was as specified in step  1 , go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, check for and repair short in wiring harness as necessary. See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. If problem persists, go to step  6 .

  5. Replace CMP sensor. After repair, check for and clear any DTCs stored in ECM memory. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate ENGINE PERFORMANCE - AUDI article.
  6. If no problem was found with wiring, and/or no voltage was present as tested in step  1 , replace ECM. See ENGINE CONTROL MODULE in appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - AUDI article. After repair, check for and clear any DTCs stored in ECM memory. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate ENGINE PERFORMANCE - AUDI article.
