Engine coolant temperature
Display field: 1 Possible malfunction cause Corrective action

  • Engine too cold
  • If necessary, perform test drive.
 
  • Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor or wiring to ) Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM J220
Greater than 215
  • Radiator dirty
  • Clean radiator.
 
  • Radiator coolant fan not functioning
 
  • Thermostat malfunctioning
 
  • Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor or wiring to Motronic ECM J220
Engine speed (at idle)
Display field: 3 Possible malfunction cause Corrective action
Less than 16
  • Throttle valve control module sticking or malfunctioning
Greater than 18
  • Throttle valve control module sticking or malfunctioning
  • Large amount of unmetered air (cannot be compensated for by the idle stabilization)
Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) J220 supply voltage

  • Generator malfunctioning
  • Check Generator. Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting Component Locations
 
  • Battery heavily discharged
 
  • Battery heavily loaded shortly after starting due to high charging current and electrical consumers
  • Increase revs slightly for a few minutes and switch off electrical consumers.
 
  • Transfer resistance in the current supply or the Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) J220 Ground (GND) connection
 
  • Current draw when ignition is off
  • Eliminate current draw.

  • Voltage regulator on generator malfunctioning
  • Check voltage regulator and replace if necessary.
 
  • Excess voltage due to jump starting or quick charging unit
