Exhaust Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) in instrument cluster (vehicles with engine codes AFP and BDF), checking
Component location of exhaust MIL
Version A
Version B
Meaning of exhaust MIL
The exhaust Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) lights up when exhaust relevant malfunctions are recognized by the Engine Control Module (ECM).
- Blinking: There is a malfunction that causes damage to the catalytic converter in this driving condition. In this case, vehicle must only be driven at reduced power!
- Continuously lit: There is a malfunction that causes increased emissions. Check DTC memory.
- DTC memory must still be checked if there are drivability problems or customer complaints and the MIL is not lit, since malfunctions can be stored without causing the MIL to light immediately.
Recommended special tools and equipment
- V.A.G 1526 multimeter or V.A.G 1715 multimeter
- V.A.G 1594 connector test kit
