Cam Actuators --, Checking: General Description

The Cam Actuators -- are electromechanical actuators. One actuator is used per cylinder. Each actuator controls the switching between the different cam profiles of the intake valves of the cylinders and can be commanded on individually by the Engine/Motor Control Module -J623-. Each actuator is attached externally to the cylinder head cover by a bolt. They are sealed with O rings. When the actuator is activated by the Engine/Motor Control Module -J623-, a metal actuator pin engages in the corresponding spirally cut switch groove that runs around the end of the camshaft-socket. Due to this spiral cut, the camshaft-socket moves in an axial direction as it rotates. When the camshaft-socket has reached its end position, the actuator is de-energized and the actuator pin is pushed back to its initial position by the contour of the switch groove.
