Selector Lever Cable, Checking And Adjusting

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Torque Wrench 1331 5-50Nm: VAG1331
Pry Lever: 80-200

Brief Description

To check the selector lever cable for ease of movement, remove it from the transmission and position the removed end so it does not make contact anywhere.

Then the selector lever is moved and the selector lever cable installed again on the transmission.

After that, the selector lever cable must be adjusted.

Do not grease the selector lever cable connection.

Always Adjust the Selector Lever Cable If:

The selector lever cable was removed from the transmission.
The engine and (or) transmission were removed and installed.
Sections of the subframe mount were removed and installed.
The cable itself or the selector mechanism was removed and installed.
The engine/transmission position was changed, for example, were installed without tension.

Checking

-- Remove the air filter housing with the air duct hose. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the battery and the battery tray. Refer to BATTERY TRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Move the selector lever into "P".

-- Use the : 80-200 to pry the selector lever cable -3- out of the selector lever -arrow-.

-- Remove the bolts -2- and place the selector lever cable -3- with the cable bracket -1- upward.

-- Move the selector lever in the vehicle from "P" to "S" several times and then back to "P".

The selector lever and selector lever cable must move easily while doing so.

-- Then re-install the selector lever cable.

Adjusting

-- Move the selector lever into "P".

-- Selector shaft on the transmission is also in "P". Push the lever all the way to the rear opposite the direction of travel to check it.

NOTE:

Raise the vehicle to make sure the transmission is in "P" (parking lock is engaged). The front wheels must not turn together in any direction.

-- Loosen the adjusting bolt -1- for the selector lever cable -2-.

-- Lightly tap the handle on the selector lever back and forth but do not move it out of "P" under any circumstances.

-- Re-tighten the adjusting bolt -1-.

-- Install the battery tray and the battery. Refer to BATTERY TRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the air filter housing with the air duct hose. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
