The Rear electronic module (REM) both transmits and receives information via standard serial communication - Volcano Lite (Volvo CAN based distributed real-time Operative environment). The DTC is stored if the control module registers a serious interruption (e. g. communication blocked) by:

The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be detected when the ignition is in position II for at least 10 seconds and the battery voltage is > 10.5 volts.

NOTE:

In the event of REM-DDxx diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), the rear electronic module (REM) must not be replaced as the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicates a short-circuit in one or more conductors in the LIN network. The rear electronic module (REM) is the only control module that monitors the voltage level in the LIN wiring. The rear electronic module (REM) is therefore the only control module that can store a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for a short-circuit to ground or supply voltage in one of the cables. Do not replace the rear electronic module (REM) in the event of a LIN fault unless VIDA (Volvo scan tool) has indicated that the rear electronic module (REM) has an internal fault.
