Condition

The control modules communicate with each other for exchange of information in a network via a standardized serial communication procedure - CAN (Controller Area Network). The diagnostic trouble code is stored if the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects a malfunction in CAN communication.

Substitute Value 

• CAN communication is disabled.
• Cruise control shut off.
• Fuel cut-off that follows accelerator pedal position.
• Closing of throttle during braking.

Possible Source 

• Contact resistance in the terminals.
• Short-circuit between Control area network (CAN) wiring
• Open-circuit in the control area network (CAN) wiring

Fault symptom[s] 

• General warning lamp lit
• ETS warning lamp lit
• The cruise control does not function at all
• The engine judders under acceleration
• The engine judders heavily after engine braking
• Uneven idle.
