Checking the high speed network
The fault source on the bus cable may be a long way from where the check is carried out. Therefore start the check at one end of the cable and work through the bus system methodically until the fault is found.
Other information
- To access the bus cable see appropriate wiring diagram article.
Check the bus cable for open-circuits according to:Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Remember that the CAN network is only a communication network. There are no fuses, contact breakers or sensors on the CAN bus.
HINT: If the fault is detected before all the following cables have been examined, the following cables need not be checked.
HINT: If possible, measure from the rear of the affected connectors so that they are not damaged.
The following cables and connectors must be examined to localize the open-circuit:
Cable between:
- Electronic throttle module (ETM) terminal #4 and Engine control module (ECM) terminal #55A.
To connect the breakout box to the Electronic throttle module (ETM), see:Connecting breakout box, Engine control module (ECM)

- Engine control module (ECM) #1B and transmission control module (TCM) terminal #1B.
To connect the breakout box to the Engine control module (ECM), see:Connecting breakout box, Engine control module (ECM)
To connect the breakout box to the Transmission control module (TCM) (AW), see:Connecting breakout box, Transmission control module (TCM)

- There is no transmission control module (TCM) in manual transmission vehicles. The following cables must therefore be examined in this case:
Engine control module (ECM) terminal #1B and Anti-lock brake system module (ABS) terminal #10 (or terminal #20 if the vehicle has a button with the text "DSTC" on the center console).
Engine control module (ECM) terminal #13B and Anti-lock brake system module (ABS) terminal #11 (or terminal #19 if the vehicle has a button with the text "DSTC" on the center console).

To connect the breakout box to the Anti-lock brake system module (ABS), see:Connecting the ABS breakout box
- Central electronic module (CEM) terminal #18B and Anti-lock brake system module (ABS) terminal #10 (or terminal #20 if the vehicle has a button with the text "DSTC" on the center console) and intermediate connector 54/3R.
