Seat Belt Reminder

The seat belt reminder reminds the driver to put on the seat belt. There are four versions of the seat belt reminder:

  1. warning for driver's seat (American market)
  2. warning for front seats and back seat (American market)
  3. warning for front seats (European market)
  4. warning for front seats and back seat (European market)

The difference between the two is described below. The signal indicating the variant is transmitted by the central electronic module (CEM) (4/56) via CAN.

If the seat belt is not fastened, this is indicated to the driver, partly by two small symbols lighting up by the roof lamp. Partly by a sound from and a symbol lighting in the driver information module (DIM) (5/1).

1. American variant, only driver's seat

Monitoring only occurs for the seat belt on the driver's seat in the vehicle.

When the ignition is switched on, the symbols light continuously for 6 seconds, or until the driver's seat belt is fastened. At the same time there will be a audible signal from the driver information module (DIM) for the same period of time. If the driver then undoes the seat belt, the audible signal will not resume if more than 6 seconds have passed since the ignition was switched on.

2. American variant, front seats and back seat

Monitoring of all seats in the vehicle.

3. European variant, only front seats

Same function as for European variant (front seats and back seat), but no warning or information on status for seats in back seat.

4. European variant, front seats and back seat

All the seats in the vehicle are monitored.

Warning lamps and audible signals are synchronized and flash/emit sound at same time. The audible warning signal has four different levels. If the driver's seat belt and/or the front passenger seat belt, when someone is sitting in the driver's seat and/or passenger seat, is not fastened when the ignition is switched on, the symbols will flash in time with the audible warning signal.

Each time the vehicle is switched on, and if anyone removes their seat belt when the engine is on regardless of speed, an audible warning signal will sound at least three times. If the vehicle is stationary after these three warning signals, the warning signals will be turned off. When vehicle speed exceeds 10 km/h, audible warning signals will sound for a period of 30 seconds at the lowest level. If speed increases, audible signals will also increase, either with increased frequency (periodicity) or increased volume. When speed is reduced, audible signals will also reduce.

If speed is over 40 km/h, the audible warning signal will emit at the highest level and continue for at least 90 seconds. If the reverse gear is engaged during these 90 seconds, the warning will cease and then resume when forward speeds exceed 10 km/h.

If seat belts are removed at speeds over 40 km/h, there will first be a period of 30 s at low volume and then 90 s at the highest volume regardless of speed. The same applies to the back seats, but the warning can be stopped by the driver pressing the OK button on the turn signal lever.

In the driver information module (DIM), there is a message that shows which seat belt is fastened. This message shows when any seat belt in the vehicle changes status. The message also shows if the back door is opened while driving to make the driver observant of the seat belt status in the back seat.
