CAN = Controller Area Network

P1 and P2 CAN module recovery (does not apply to P3 CAN modules or any MOST modules):

A CAN module which no longer responds on the network due to a failed or interrupted download can usually be recovered. This procedure assumes the module is not entering programming mode due to a download error, not because of a hardware or vehicle issue.

When a CAN module is supplied with power, it always starts in programming mode, then goes into its normal running mode after a very short period of time (20 milliseconds). If the module receives a PROG command during this start-up phase, it will remain in programming mode instead of continuing to its normal running mode. The attached procedure provides a PROG command during this start-up phase which keeps the module in programming mode.

When SEND PROG is chosen, the button changes to STOP PROG.

It is important to be aware of this, as clicking twice in a row will result in stopping the PROG command.

When SEND PROG is chosen, there is a slight delay and the hour glass is shown instead of the cursor. Once the hour glass disappears, VIDA continually sends a PROG command until some other action is taken (STOP PROG, READ HW NUMBER, READ SERIAL NUMBER, etc...). This function is reliable in current VIDA versions and prevents the need for any time-critical procedure used earlier.

Due to a large number of variables (vehicle platforms, software types, hardware types and failure modes) this procedure will not work in all cases.

The attached procedure is a one page document suitable for printing.

TJ 27236: P1 & P2 CAN module recovery

(does not apply to P3 CAN modules or any MOST modules):

Connect a battery charger. Use Ignition Position II for the entire procedure.

  1. Purchase (but do not download) the software product for the affected module.
  2. Select the Software Advanced tab and Click SEND PROG.
  3. Choose the correct ECU. When recovering a CEM, the correct ECUs are:
    • P1: ECU 50
    • P2 -2004: ECU 40
    • P2 2005-: ECU 50
  4. READ HW NUMBER and READ SERIAL NUMBER.
    • If the module responds, it is in programming mode. Close the Advanced tab (do not choose SEND RESET). The vehicle will remain in programming mode, the DIM will be blank, all lighting will be off. Download the software in the normal way.

    • If the module does not respond, it needs to be manually brought into programming mode. Click SEND RESET.

To manually bring a module into programming mode:

    • Confirm the latest version and update of VIDA is being used.
    • Confirm the latest DiCE firmware is loaded.
    • An external power supply for the DiCE will be needed
  5. Check that the battery has sufficient power and disconnect the battery charger.
  6. Power the DiCE externally. Do not use the vehicle's battery.
  7. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  8. Click SEND PROG, wait for the hour-glass to disappear, then connect the battery cable.
  9. Choose the correct ECU, attempt to READ HW NUMBER and READ SERIAL NUMBER.
    • If the module responds, it is now in PROG mode. Close the Advanced tab (do not choose SEND RESET). The vehicle will remain in programming mode, the DIM will be blank, all lighting will be off. Connect the battery charger and download the software in the normal way.
    • If the module does not respond, Click SEND RESET and repeat steps 3 and 4. This may take several attempts.
  10. Once the module responds, connect a battery charger and download software in the normal way.
