• Ignition off.

  Check the auxiliaries belt and belt tensioner. Check for damage.

  Check the function of the generator (GEN) freewheel. In an undamaged freewheel, the generator rotor shaft can only rotate freely in one direction but not the other.

  Check that the air ducts for the generator (GEN) are not blocked.

  HINT: Another test to check the alternator's function is to perform Quicktest of alternator function. Found in VIDA vehicle communication under Central electronic module (CEM). VIDA is Volvo-specific scan tool. 

  HINT: If the diagnostic trouble code is stored again after driving, replace the generator (GEN). 

  Remedy as necessary.
