The pedal position sensor is part of the "Active brake assist" (BA) function and sends a signal to the brake control module (BCM) regarding the position of the brake pedal and the speed with which it was depressed. These signals are used to determine how much brake force is needed in each braking situation.

The pedal position sensor is also found in vehicles without BA. It is then used by the brake control module (BCM) to check the function of the brake light switch.

Diagnostic trouble code BCM-C004864 is generated if the brake control module (BCM) registers an unreasonable signal from the pedal position sensor.

The diagnostic trouble code can be diagnosed after the following: The brake pedal is pressed all the way down, the engine is started and the brake pedal released. After remaining stationary for approx. 10 seconds, the vehicle is driven faster than 10 km/h (6.2 mph) for at least 10 seconds. The vehicle is then stopped by braking.
