Central Electronic Module (CEM) (4/56) [2018-2022]: Description

The Central Electronic Module (CEM) is a gateway between the FlexRay backbone and Body CAN. The control module does not contain any relays or fuses.

The Central Electronic Module (CEM) stores the vehicle configuration file.

The Parking Assistance Module (PAM) is integrated in the Central Electronic Module (CEM). The Parking Assistance Module (PAM) has its own CPU on the circuit board for the Central Electronic Module (CEM). This means that the Parking Assistance Module (PAM) cannot be replaced separately but for software download and diagnostics it is handled as its own control module.

At software download, the software and hardware of the vehicle is compared to the central database of Volvo. If the vehicle data does not correspond to the database, the database is updated with the data from the vehicle. The new software for the Central Electronic Module (CEM) is then downloaded. The PIN codes for the existing remote keys are downloaded at the same time.

Due to unique PIN codes, it is not possible to switch the Central Electronic Module (CEM) from one vehicle to another.

When replacing the Central Electronic Module (CEM), the Vehicle Identification Number VIN cannot be read until the software has been downloaded from the Volvo central database.

If possible, all data must be read out from the control module before replacement. After replacement, the data must be programmed into the new control module.
