Steering Angle Neutral Position Learning: Procedure

How to use this Service Information .

NOTICE: 

• If the steering angle neutral position is cleared, do the steering angle neutral position learning procedure.
• The steering angle neutral position is cleared whenever you do any of these actions:
• • -

    12 volt battery terminal is disconnected from the 12 volt battery.

  • -

    Disconnect the connector from the steering gearbox.

  • -

    The power supply voltage for the steering gearbox is decreased.

• When working with a vehicle equipped with the electronic air suspension, be sure to set it to the leveling off mode to prevent unexpected operation. Refer to the Electronic Air Suspension System Service Precautions - Refer to: Electronic Air Suspension System Connector Fitting Precautions or Electronic Air Suspension System Service Precautions for the procedure.

NOTE: 

• There are three learning methods.
• If the steering angle neutral position is cleared, the VSA indicator will come on.
• The learning cannot be done when the EPS indicator is on.
• If the learning does not complete, check the EPS system .
• While learning, pay attention to the following:
• • -

    If you turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode while learning, do the learning again from the beginning.

  • -

    Do not lift up the vehicle, when you start the engine.

  • -

    Do not turn the steering rapidly.

Learning method while driving 

1. Steering Angle Neutral Position - Learn

   Procedure 

   • Drive the vehicle and turn it right and left on intersections at speeds above 6 mph (10 km/h) until the indicators go off.

   NOTE:  Difficult situations for the learning are below:

   • Driving on a rough road.
   • Driving at 6 mph (10 km/h) or less.
   • Driving on a sloped road.
   • Rapid acceleration and deceleration.

   After Learning 

   • Check that the indicators go off.

   Learning method while stopped 

2. Steering Angle Neutral Position - Learn

   Preconditions 

   • Vehicle on Level Ground
   • Engine Started
   • Front wheels positioned straight ahead

   Procedure 

   • Turn the steering wheel in the following order:

     NOTE:  You must return the steering wheel to it's original position (wheels straight) after each step is completed.

   • • Turn it one full rotation to the left.
     • Turn it one full rotation to the right.
     • Turn it 1/4 to the left.
     • Turn it 1/4 to the right.
     • Turn it 1/4 to the left.
     • Turn it 1/4 to the right.

   After Learning 

   • Check that the indicators go off.

   Learning with the HDS 

3. Steering Angle Neutral Position - Learn

   Preconditions 

   • HDS Connected

   Procedure 

   • Do the VSA sensor neutral position memorization - Refer to: VSA Sensor Neutral Position Memorization or VSA Modulator-Control Unit Update .

     NOTE:  If when VSA sensor neutral position memorization for VSA system is performed, the steering angle neutral position is cleared and overwritten.
