DTC P0106: Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor Range/Performance Problem
General Description
The amount of intake air is adjusted by the opening angle of the throttle valve, and the pressure inside the intake manifold is measured with the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor. When the throttle valve is opened fully for quick acceleration, the intake manifold pressure suddenly drops to near atmospheric pressure, and the MAP sensor output reads near atmospheric pressure. The powertrain control module (PCM) compares the intake manifold internal pressure estimated from the output value of the MAP sensor (intake manifold inside pressure), the throttle position (TP) sensor, the barometric pressure (BARO) sensor output, and the engine RPM. When the deviation is large (when it is in a malfunction area), the PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.

Malfunction Threshold
The difference between the amount of intake air manifold pressure measured by the MAP sensor and the amount of intake air calculated from the TP sensor output is out of the normal area for at least 5.0 seconds.
Possible Cause
The causes shown may not be a complete list of all potential problems, and it is possible that there may be other causes.
- MAP sensor output signal low
- MAP sensor output signal high
- Intake air system clogged
- Evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve failure
- Valve timing incorrect
- Intake air system air leak
Confirmation Procedure
Operating Condition
- Start the engine. Hold the engine speed [Engine Speed] at 3, 000 RPM without load (in P or N) until the radiator fan comes on.
- Let the engine idle for at least 5 seconds.
- Drive the vehicle at a steady speed of 40 mph (60 km/h) or more and engine speed [Engine Speed] between 1, 000 - 5, 500 RPM for at least 5 seconds.
- When freeze data is stored, drive the vehicle under those conditions instead of Driving Pattern step 3.
- When you have difficulty duplicating the DTC because of road conditions and traffic situations, repeat the driving pattern several times.
- Drive the vehicle in this manner only if the traffic regulations and ambient conditions allow.
Diagnosis Details
Conditions for setting the DTC
When a malfunction is detected during the first drive cycle, a Pending DTC is stored in the PCM memory. If the malfunction returns in the next (second) drive cycle, the MIL comes on and a Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot are stored.
Conditions for clearing the DTC
The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot can be cleared with the scan tool clear command.
