Removal And Installation
NOTE:
Before removing and installing the clockspring and stalk unit the following preliminary operations must be carried out.
- Position the vehicle with the front wheels straight.
- Turn the ignition key to the Off position and extract it.
- Disconnect the battery cables and insulate them.
- Wait for 10 minutes before proceeding.
- FOLLOW ALL THE PRESCRIBED SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS. Refer to WARNING .
- Remove the trim from the steering column. Refer to SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the Driver AirBag (DAB) from the steering wheel. Refer to AIR BAG, DRIVER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the steering wheel from the upper steering column shaft. Refer to WHEEL, STEERING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Clockspring (1a) is equipped with a device that automatically stops it from rotating when it is removed from the steering column. If the stalk unit (1f) is reused, take care not to press the clockspring ring (1b) in order not to turn the upper ring nut (1c) with respect to the lower ring nut (1d) and affect the operation of the clockspring.NOTE:
In the event of reuse of the clockspring it is advisable to tie up the two wheels (1c) and (1d) by applying a band to retainers (1e).
NOTE:The clockspring cannot be separated from the stalk unit.
- Disconnect the electrical connections for the clockspring (1a) and the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) (1b).
- Remove the screw (1a) and loosen the stalk unit collar (1b).
- Move the stalk unit to release the retainer from its housing on the steering column.
- Release and remove the clockspring and stalk unit assembly.
- Position the stalk unit and clockspring in its housing and engage the retainer in its housing on the steering column.NOTE:
It is important that the retainer is correctly engaged, to prevent vibrations.
- Position the retaining band (1b) and tighten the appropriate mounting screw (1a). Tighten the screw securely.
- Connect the electrical connections for the clockspring (1a) and the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) (1b).
- Reinstall the steering wheel onto the upper steering column shaft. Refer to WHEEL, STEERING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Reinstall the Driver AirBag (DAB) onto the steering wheel. Refer to AIR BAG, DRIVER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Reinstall the trim onto the steering column. Refer to SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
