PCV System: Testing: Notes
NOTE:
American Motors PCV valves are color coded: Black for 4-cylinder engines and Green for 6-cylinder engines. Green PCV valves have a "T" fitting at inlet. When testing, small port of "T" fitting must be plugged.
- Remove PCV valve from rubber grommet in rocker arm cover. Connect valve to PCV valve tester (J-2311 or equivalent). Use adapter, supplied with tester, on 4-cylinder engines.
- Connect a vacuum gauge to a central location on intake manifold. Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Manifold vacuum must be at least 14 in. Hg.
- PCV valve must be in vertical position while testing. With engine operating at curb idle speed, compare PCV valve tester reading and vacuum gauge reading with flow rate chart.
- Replace PCV valve if airflow rate is either above or below specifications shown in PCV Valve Flow Rate chart.
