Address Words & Diagnostic Functions: Notes

With scan tool in Rapid Data Transfer mode one of two address words is used to transfer data from ECM. Address words are 00 - Automatic Test Sequence (guided fault finding) and 01 - Engine Electronics. Address word 00 initiates the automatic test sequence, and results in a DTC check on all OBD capable systems in the vehicle via rapid data transfer. Address word 01 - ENGINE ELECTRONICS is used to initiate various testing parameters (i.e. FUNCTION 04 - BASIC SETTING). When address word 01 - ENGINE ELECTRONICS is selected, scan tool will display control module identification. For example:

• 4D0907551 - Part number allocation
• 2.7L - Engine displacement
• V6/5VT - Inline engine, 4 cylinders/5 valve turbo
• "G" i.e. no indication - Vehicle with or without cruise control system
• 0002 - Data version (software version) of control module
• Coding 06612 - Control module coding
• WSC 06388 - Factory identification of VAG1551, with which the last coding was performed
