Adaptation Of Throttle Valve Control Module
Throttle Valve Control Module (TVCM) teaches ECM various positions of throttle valve when ignition is on. Throttle positions are stored in the ECM in the form of voltage values. Throttle position is communicated to ECM through angle sensors in TVCM.
TVCM adaptation must be performed when voltage supply to TVCM or ECM is lost, or if either module is replaced. Adaptation requirement is recognized, when stored values from angle sensors do not match actual measured voltages. TVCM adaptation occurs:
- Automatically if ignition is switched on for 10 seconds or more, without operating starter and TVCM and ECM recognize need for adaptation. No notification that adaptation was successful will be given when this happens.
- When initiated through diagnostic function 04 - BASIC SETTING, in DISPLAY GROUP 060 with ignition on.
- Connect VAS 5051 or equivalent scan tool to DLC. DLC is located behind cover under left side of steering column. Using scan tool check for and clear any DTCs in memory. See FUNCTION 02 - RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES .
- Using scan tool, press "01" to select address word 01 - ENGINE ELECTRONICS.
- Press "Q" button to confirm entry. Press "04" to select diagnostic function 04 - BASIC SETTING. Press "Q" button to confirm entry.
- Enter "060" to select DISPLAY GROUP - 060. Press "Q" button to confirm input.
- Follow scan tool instructions for TVCM adaptation. ECM will abort adaptation if: throttle valve cannot be closed completely (e.g. dirty throttle body), battery voltage is too low, engine is started or accelerator pedal is pressed during adaptation or throttle valve housing bolts are loose.
After termination, if scan tool displays "FUNCTION IS UNKNOWN OR CANNOT BE PERFORMED AT THE MOMENT". Next time ignition is switched on, adaptation will be automatically repeated. End function 04 - BASIC SETTING by pressing "BACK ARROW" button on scan tool, and selecting 06 - END OUTPUT. Turn ignition off, and disconnect scan tool from DLC.
