SUBJECT

Update Programming (Flashing) Multi-Media Interface

SERVICE

When a MMI and Navigation DVD update is indicated.

REQUIRED TOOLS

VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS

MMI UPDATE

NOTE: Certain steps in this procedure will need to be repeated as some components will not be updated on the first run-through.

MMI UPDATE VERIFICATION

After passing disclaimer screen:

  • Press and hold SETUP and RETURN buttons, until MMI screen changes.
  • MMI screen must display "SWUpdate" in lower right corner.
  • Press lower right control button to enter "SWUpdate" mode.
    • MMI screen will change to "CD-ROM" display.
  • Highlight "CD-ROM" entry.
  • Press center control knob to select highlighted entry.
    • MMI screen will change to "Meta Information" display.
  • Wait at least 20 seconds while "Meta Information" is being read.
    • MMI screen will change to "Standard" display.
  • Highlight "Standard" entry.
  • Press the center control knob to select highlighted entry.
    • A list of MOST components will appear.

    • All entries, except NAV, should have "N>" displayed.
  • Press "Return" button 4 times to exit MMI Update Verification.
  • Remove MMI Update CD from CD changer.

NAVIGATION DVD UPDATE

  • With MMI turned On, activate Navigation mode by pressing "NAV" button.

  • Press eject to remove current navigation DVD from drive unit, located on left side of trunk.
  • Wait until message "Insert Navigation DVD" is displayed on MMI screen.

  • Insert new Navigation DVD into drive unit.
    • MMI screen will change to new display.

  • With "Yes" highlighted, press center control knob to select highlighted entry.
    • Software update will proceed automatically.

    NOTE: Progress percentage displayed does not increase at a constant rate.
  • When update is complete:

  • MMI screen will prompt you to press "RETURN".

  • Press "RETURN' button.
    • MMI system will reboot.
    • In some cases, after passing disclaimer screen:

    • MMI will display message that it is being initialized.

    • After initialization standard Navigation MMI screen will be displayed.
NOTE: Old Navigation DVD will not work in this vehicle.

CODING & ADAPTION CHECK

With new MM I software, it is necessary to specify the telephone system in the car again.

  • Using the VAS 5051, enter Vehicle Self-Diagnosis mode.
  • Select "Address word "07 - Display-/ control unit".

    Check Display unit coding:

    • Display unit coding should be "103".

  • Select forward arrow > on navigation bar.
  • Select Function "10 - Adaption".
  • Input "12" on keypad to select "Channel 12".
  • Select "Q" button to confirm.
  • Change "Channel 12" value to "4" using keyboard button.

  • Select "Save" and "Accept" buttons to record change.
  • Return to "Diagnosis function" screen using backward arrow < on navigation bar.

    MMI system must be rebooted as follows:

  • Select Function "10 - Adaption".
  • Input "111" on keypad to select "Channel 111".
  • Select "Q" button to confirm.
  • Change "Channel 111" value to "1" using slider bar.
    NOTE: MMI system will reboot once.
  • Return to "Diagnosis function" screen using backward arrow < on navigation bar.
    • If any error message is displayed:
  • Press cancel.
  • After MM I system completes reboot, continue with VAS 5051 verification:

  • Select "Address word "07 - Display-/ control unit".
  • Select Function "10 - Adaption".
  • Input "1" on keypad to select "Channel 1".
  • Select "Q" button to confirm.
  • Compare "Channel 1" value with value recorded during "Requirements" part of this Technical Bulletin.
    • If "Channel 1" value is same as recorded earlier:
  • No Action Necessary.
    • If "Channel 1" value is not same as recorded earlier:
  • Change "Channel 1" value using keyboard button.
  • Select "Save" and "Accept" buttons to record change.

FINAL SYSTEM CHECK

  • Delete all DTCs from "Address work "07 -Display-/ control unit".
  • Verify MMI operation in all modes (Radio, CD, NAV etc.)
  • Attempt an OnStar phone call (Blue button).
NOTE: Radio should Mute and Green OnStar light should flash.

HINTS FOR ERROR CORRECTION

  • If MM I screen displays "No response from device", use option "Continue waiting" at least once. This error happens rarely with the Tuner and can usually be fixed by choosing this option or waiting a little longer without interaction.
  • If error is shown "Device is not in download mode", continue with next device and complete download until you restart MMI. Then start a complete new download process.
