- Speed regulator VAG 1788/10
Requirements:
- Vehicle is stationary
- Electrical consumers switched off (radiator fan must not run during the test)
- Air conditioner switched off
- Coolant temperature at least 80 °C. Refer to Display group 004, Display zone 3.
Work step 1: check DTC memory
Test requirement:
- Engine not running; ignition switched on.
- Connect the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051. Refer to Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051, connecting and selecting functions , and select the vehicle system "01 - Engine electronics" from the menu. When doing this the ignition should be switched on.
Display on VAS 5051:
- Select diagnosis function "02 - check DTC memory" from the menu -1-.
Display on VAS 5051:
1 - Content of DTC memory:

If a fault is stored:
- Rectify fault and erase DTC memory. Then take vehicle for a road test and check DTC memory once again to check for faults.

Test requirement:
- Engine not running; ignition switched on.

- Select diagnosis function "05 - Erase DTC memory" from the menu -1-.

Work step 3: adjust the throttle valve control part to the engine control module
Test requirement:
- Engine not running; ignition switched on.

- Select the diagnosis function "04 - Basic settings" from the menu -1-.

Note on display zone 3:
During adaptation display zone 3 indicates various numbers, which represent the actual adaptation status. It is not of principal importance what the learning stage counter (display zone 3) displays during the adaptation period, but that the specification "ADP O.K." is indicated in display zone 4 after the adaptation process.
If the specification "ADP O.K." is attained:
- Proceed to the next step.
Work step 4: testing operation mode of oxygen sensor control
- Switch ignition off.
- Start the engine (depress clutch pedal on vehicles with manual transmission).
- If the engine is not started after adaptation of the throttle valve control module in diagnostic function "04 -basic setting", an entry into DTC memory may occur.
- If necessary, select the vehicle system "01 - Engine electronics" and diagnosis function "04 - Basic settings" again after starting the engine.
- Apply speed regulator VAG 1788/10 to the accelerator pedal and increase engine speed to 2000 RPM.
Test requirement:
- Engine running at 2000 RPM.

- The first digit of the three-digit display (heating) fluctuates between 0 and 1 in certain operating ranges.
- The oxygen sensor control of oxygen sensor (after the catalytic converter; Bank 1, Probe 2) is not active when the engine is not running under load. In this case the third digit of the three-digit display is 0.
- Only continue with the test when the displays have indicated "111" in display zone 1 and "110" in display zone 2 at least once.
Work step 5: diagnosis of ageing of oxygen sensor before catalytic converter
Test requirement:
- Engine still running at 2000 RPM.

- Press the [Back Arrow] button four times to advance to Display group 034.
- Check the readout in display zone -4-.

Work step 11: diagnosis of fuel tank air tightness (Leak Detection)
Test requirements:
- Engine idling.
- Fuel tank filler cap briefly opened (to release pressure)

- Check the specified value in display field -4-:
- Test duration is approx. 90 seconds.
- If the leak detection function is performed several times in sequence, the tank filler cap must first be opened briefly every time to release pressure.
